Trump Modi Trade Talks Continue, Says White House: US-India Relations Strengthen

In a significant update on Trump Modi trade talks, the White House announced that both leaders maintain frequent communication as trade negotiations between the United States and India continue to progress.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump “has great respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi” and that the two leaders “speak quite often” about ongoing cooperation.

Leavitt emphasized that both sides are engaged in “very serious discussions” on trade and economic growth, underscoring the administration’s commitment to advancing bilateral relations. “The President and his trade team are deeply involved in discussions with India regarding trade and investment,” she added.

According to Leavitt, President Trump recently connected with Prime Minister Modi during Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office, joined by several senior Indian-American officials. She noted that Trump “feels very positively about the India-US relationship” and commended Sergio Gor, Washington’s ambassador in New Delhi, for strengthening diplomatic coordination.

Last week, while addressing a press event in South Korea, President Trump signaled optimism about reaching a new trade deal with India, calling it a “mutually beneficial step forward.” His remarks mark a thaw in relations that had earlier soured after the US doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, responding to New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil.

The United States initially imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods on July 30, followed by another 25% hike a week later. However, after Washington introduced new sanctions against Russian oil majors Rosneft and Lukoil, Indian refiners have gradually reduced their dependency on Russian crude supplies.

Trade experts believe the renewed dialogue could lead to a recalibration of the US-India trade framework, balancing energy needs and strategic ties.

The continued engagement between Trump and Modi reflects the broader intention of both nations to rebuild economic trust and expand collaboration in technology, defense, and clean energy sectors.
