Punjab Police have busted a major Pakistan-backed arms and drug trafficking racket in Amritsar, arresting five suspects and recovering six sophisticated pistols and 1.01 kg of heroin. According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, the accused were in direct touch with handlers across the border and used social media apps to coordinate deliveries of illegal weapons and narcotics inside Punjab.
The arrested individuals — Akash Masih, Prince, Karanbir Singh (Karan), Sukhwinder Singh, and Gurbhej Singh alias Bheja — hail from villages close to the Pakistan border, making them key links in the cross-border supply chain. Police said the weapons included five .30-bore pistols and one 9mm Glock.
A checkpoint near Chheharta first led to the arrest of Akash and Prince. Technical inputs then helped track down Karanbir and Sukhwinder, from whom three pistols and 1.10 kg heroin were recovered. Their interrogation later led police to Bheja and another .30-bore pistol.
Officers say the gang would receive weapon consignments and then distribute them to criminals operating in the region. Two separate FIRs under the Arms Act and NDPS Act have been registered, and further investigation is underway to map the gang’s backward and forward links.
