Los Angeles: Police say Nick Reiner, the son of legendary Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been booked on suspicion of murder following the deaths of his parents at their Brentwood residence.
Los Angeles police confirmed Monday that the 32-year-old is being held without bail. Investigators have not yet released details about the cause of death or the evidence that led them to identify their son as the suspect. Prosecutors have also not filed formal charges so far.
Officers were called to the couple’s home Sunday afternoon after a family member reported finding two people dead inside. A source familiar with the investigation said the Reiners’ daughter was the one who discovered them.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody later that night, around 9:15 p.m., several hours after police first arrived at the scene. The case is now being prepared for presentation to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to file charges and what counts may apply.
Authorities are treating the case as a double homicide. They have not said whether a weapon was recovered or whether there were signs of forced entry at the home.
According to a source briefed on the investigation, Nick Reiner was seen arguing with his father the night before the deaths at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien in Los Angeles. Michele Singer Reiner was also present at the gathering.
Rob Reiner, 78, was one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, known for films such as When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap and A Few Good Men. He first gained fame as an actor on the sitcom All in the Family before becoming a major force behind the camera.
Michele Singer Reiner was a producer and longtime collaborator, as well as his wife of many years.
Following the news, tributes poured in from actors, filmmakers and public figures, many highlighting Reiner’s impact on American cinema and his reputation for warmth on set.
The deaths also sparked political controversy after President Donald Trump made public remarks referencing Rob Reiner’s political views. Several Republican lawmakers criticized the comments, calling them inappropriate amid an ongoing criminal investigation.
The district attorney’s office said the case has not yet been formally submitted for charging and emphasized that the review process is still underway.
Nick Reiner’s court appearance will depend on when prosecutors decide to move forward.
The investigation remains active.
