India’s telecom industry witnessed a mixed performance in October 2025, with subscriber trends diverging sharply across major operators. According to the latest TRAI October subscriber data, Bharti Airtel staged a strong recovery, Reliance Jio recorded a notable slowdown in monthly additions, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to face deepening customer losses. State-run BSNL, meanwhile, posted solid numbers as its ongoing 4G rollout began to show early momentum.
Industry growth slows sharply with just 1.4 million new wireless users
Fresh figures from TRAI show that the broader telecom market added 14 lakh (1.4 million) wireless subscribers in October — less than half of September’s 34 lakh additions.
This decline indicates that the market is entering a more mature, churn-driven phase where net subscriber growth remains subdued despite aggressive competition.
Airtel records its strongest rebound since February
Airtel emerged as the top performer in an otherwise slow month.
-
The operator added 12.5 lakh subscribers, nearly triple its September additions.
-
This marked its best monthly growth since February 2025.
-
Airtel’s total wireless base rose to 393.6 million.
Analysts attribute this improvement to stronger 4G/5G upgrades, better network quality across metro cities, and steady traction in the postpaid segment.
Jio remains market leader but growth decelerates sharply
Reliance Jio retained its top position with a base of 484.7 million users, but its monthly additions fell significantly:
-
Jio added 19.97 lakh subscribers in October, down from 32.49 lakh in September.
-
This represents a 38% month-on-month decline.
The slowdown is likely linked to saturation in urban markets and a normalization of the 5G upgrade wave seen earlier this year. However, Jio continues to expand in rural circles, where its device ecosystem and network reach remain core strengths.
Vodafone Idea loses over 20 lakh users — subscriber base dips further
Vodafone Idea’s struggles deepened in October:
-
The operator lost 20.83 lakh subscribers, nearly triple its September losses.
-
Its subscriber base dropped to 200.7 million.
Concerns continue to grow around Vi’s ability to invest in network expansion, retain high-value users and stay competitive.

BSNL gains momentum ahead of wider 4G rollout
BSNL delivered one of its strongest performances in years, adding 26.9 lakh users in October.
Most of this growth came from tier-2 and tier-3 markets where its early-stage 4G rollout has begun to see traction.
Experts believe the full-scale 4G expansion planned for early 2026 could significantly reshape rural competition.
Wireless base rises modestly; fixed-line services show steady improvement
Overall wireless teledensity edged up to 86.76% in October.
Wireline services continued their slow revival as Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea collectively added more than 26,000 landline users, although BSNL recorded a slight drop.
