Tim Seifert Hits First BBL Century as Melbourne Renegades Beat Brisbane Heat

Tim Seifert smashed the first century of the 2025–26 Big Bash League season as Melbourne Renegades defeated Brisbane Heat by 14 runs at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong.

The New Zealand international produced a commanding knock of 102 off 56 balls, anchoring the Renegades’ innings after they were sent in to bat. Seifert’s innings featured nine fours and six sixes, setting the tone for a high-scoring contest in the early stages of the BBL campaign.

Renegades Recover After Early Wickets

Melbourne Renegades were under pressure at 82 for 3 in the 10th over, but Seifert steadied the innings with a crucial partnership alongside 19-year-old Ollie Peake. The duo added 121 runs, turning the match firmly in the Renegades’ favour.

Peake impressed with a fluent 57 off 29 balls, showing maturity beyond his years as the Renegades accelerated through the middle overs. Their stand helped Melbourne post a formidable 212 for 5, one of the highest totals of the season so far.

Shaheen Afridi Removed After No-Ball Call

Brisbane Heat suffered a setback when Shaheen Shah Afridi was temporarily removed from the attack. The Pakistan left-arm fast bowler was pulled up by the umpires for delivering two waist-high no-balls in the same over, shortly after Seifert reached his hundred.

The interruption disrupted Heat’s bowling rhythm at a critical stage of the innings.

Heat Fall Short Despite Late Fightback

Chasing 213 for victory, Brisbane Heat made a positive start through Colin Munro, who struck 55 off 32 balls. However, regular wickets slowed the chase, and the Heat slumped to 108 for 6 in the 13th over following Munro’s dismissal.

A late surge from Jimmy Peirson, who blasted 50 off 22 balls, and Hugh Weibgen, unbeaten on 38 off 20, briefly revived hopes of an unlikely comeback.

The turning point came in the 19th over, when Renegades captain Will Sutherland dismissed Peirson, effectively sealing the match. Brisbane eventually finished on 198 for 8, falling 14 runs short of the target.

Strong Start for Renegades in BBL 2025–26

The victory gives Melbourne Renegades early momentum in the 2025–26 Big Bash League, with Tim Seifert’s century standing out as one of the tournament’s defining performances so far.

For Brisbane Heat, the match highlighted both their explosive batting potential and the challenges they face in maintaining consistency across 20 overs.
